Here's another of the poems in an English version by me. Note that this is meant to be a poetical rendering of the text, adapting Gautier's poetic scheme and the conventions of the time (Berlioz wrote his songs in 1847) as best I could -- but this is not at all meant as a "singable" version to fit Berlioz's music. (And I must say that this text leant itself less easily to an English rendering than the first three I did ...)

CLICK HERE for the entire set of six poems

The 1st, 3rd and last verses of the poem were also set by Henri Duparc in his song, Lamento.

This English version (©2009, E. the sun has drunk
The dew that lay upon the morning grass ;
There is no rustling in the lofty elm
That canopies my dwelling, and its shade
Scarce cools me.
All is silent, save the faint
And interrupted murmur of the bee,
Settling on the sick flowers, and then again
Instantly on the wing.
                                    The plants around
Feel the too potent fervors : the tall maize
Rolls up its long green leaves ; the clover droops
Its tender foliage, and declines its blooms.

But far in the fierce sunshine tower the hills,
With all their growth of woods, silent and stern,
As if the scortching heat and dazzling light
Were but an element they loved.
                                                     Bright clouds,
Motionless pillars of the brazen heaven--
Their bases on the mountains--their white tops
Shining in the far ether--fire the air
With a reflected radiance, and make turn
The gazer's eye away.
                                    For me, I lie
Languidly in the shade, where the thick turf,
Yet virgin from the kisses of the sun,
Retains some freshness, and I woo the wind
That still delays its coming.
                                            Why so slow,
Gentle and voluble spirit of the air?
Oh, come and breathe upon the fainting earth
Coolness and life.
Is it that in his caves
He hears me? See, on yonder woody ridge,
The pine is bending his proud top, and now,
Among the nearer groves, chesnut and oak
Are tossing their green boughs about.
[WALTZ]
                  He comes ;
Lo, where the grassy meadow runs in waves!
The deep distressful silence of the scene
Breaks up with mingling of unnumbered sounds
And universal motion.
                                        He is come,
Shaking a shower of blossoms from the shrubs,
And bearing on their fragrance ;
                                                and he brings
Music of birds, and rustling of young boughs,
And sound of swaying branches, and the voice
Of distant waterfalls.
                                    All the green herbs
Are stirring in his breath ; a thousand flowers,
By the road-side and the borders of the brook,
Nod gayly to each other ;
(1803-1869) was among the most progressive composers of his era, and his original blending of symphonic forms with dramatic narrative, coupled with his keen insight into orchestration, had profound influence on the creative development of such luminaries as Richard Wagner and Franz Liszt. As a composer, Berlioz was never very popular with the French musical establishment, and despite his early successes he had difficulty getting his later works performed unless he paid for the concerts himself. But he did enjoy success as an author and music critic, and gained international fame as a conductor. In 1850 he was appointed Head Librarian of the Paris Conservatoire, which provided not only financial stability, but also something of an ironic twist to his biography. As a youth Berlioz had been sent to Paris to attend medical school, but rather than study human anatomy (which repulsed the young Hector) he preferred to study music scores, so he would sneak into—and then be kicked out of—the very library he would later manage. Especially famous for his Symphonie fantastique (1830) and Grande Messe des morts (Requiem Mass, 1837), Berlioz wrote about 50 songs with piano or guitar accompaniment, and among these the six songs from Les nuits d’ete (“The Nights of Summer”), Op. 7 (1841, orchestrated 1856) are easily the best known. Although the lyrics of all the opus 7 songs are by the influential French poet and critic Théophile Gautier (1811-1872), apparently the composer’s original intent was not that they be performed as a song cycle. Instead, he conceived them as separate songs to be performed variously by tenor, baritone, contralto, and mezzo-soprano, and was only later (but easily) convinced to orchestrate the whole set by an admiring music publisher. The selections this evening are the first, second and sixth songs from the set. Villanelle, a rustic song, joyously welcomes the returning spring with renewed hopefulness as the countryside begins to reawaken. In Le spectre de la rose (“The Ghost of the Rose”), a fading blossom at first seems to lament having been cut down in its prime, only to rejoice in its happy fate of having adorned the belle of the ball as its perfume lingers on. In the concluding barcarolle, L'île inconnue ("The Unknown Island"), a flirtatious gondolier asks his pretty young passenger to imagine which exotic shores she'd like to be whisked away to--she responds, "To the faithful shore where we're always in love!"

SELECTIONS FROM ...

Les nuits d’été
      on poems by Théophile Gautier

Villanelle

Quand viendra la saison nouvelle,
Quand auront disparu les froids,
Tous les deux nous irons, ma belle,
Pour cueillir le muguet aux bois.
Sous nos pieds égrénant les perles
Que l'on voit, au matin trembler,
Nous irons écouter les merles
      Siffler.

Le printemps est venu, ma belle;
C'est le mois des amants béni;
Et l'oiseau, satinant son aile,
Dit vers au rebord du nid.
Oh!
La voile enfle son aile,
La brise va souffler!

L'aviron est d'ivoire
Le pavillon de moiré,
Le gouvernail d'or fin;
J'ai pour lest une orange,
Pour voile une aile d'ange,
Pour mousse un séraphin.

Dites, la jeune belle,
Où voulez-vous aller?
La voile enfle son aile,
La brise va souffler!

Est-ce dans la Baltique,
Dans la mer Pacifique,
Dans l'île de Java?
Ou bien est-ce en Norvège,
Cueillir la fleur de neige,
Ou la fleur d'Angsoka?

Dites, la jeune belle
Où voulez-vous aller?

Menez-moi, dit la belle,
A la rive fidèle
Où l'on aime toujours.
---Cette rive, ma chère,
On ne la connaît guère
Au pays des amours.

Où voulez-vous aller?
The sail unfurls its wing,
The breeze begins to blow!

Might it be the Baltic?
Or the wide Pacific?
To the Isle of Java?
Or to Norway might we go
To cull flowers in the snow,
Or a bloom from Angsoka?

Tell me, my dear young thing,
Where might you wish to go?

“Carry me,” said the beauty,
“To that shore where truly
We’ll find eternal love.”
--That certain shore, my dear,
Is rarely known, I fear,
In the realm of love.

Where might you wish to go? They were published by Ricordi in 1912, and the journal Musical America recommended them “as the finest of modern concert songs” in 1922. But in addition to composing, Santoliquido published books of verse and short stories, and in 1937 and 1938 he penned several fascist, anti-Semitic articles, and also decried musical modernism. As a result he was effectively ostracized from the progressive arts community. Ironically, his third wife, pianist Ornella Pulti Santoliquido, had been a student of Alfredo Casella (a prominent Jewish-Italian composer and a particular target of Francesco's), and she became known as an advocate of modern music. As these four evocative "evening songs" demonstrate, Santoliquido’s early style blends characteristics of Debussy and Richard Strauss (by way of Puccini!), but they do not yet show the influence of the Arabic music that colored his later works, the result of a nine-year sojourn to North Africa which began in 1912. The first song, L’assiola canta (“The Horned Owl Sings”), is an invitation to share an intimate walk through the woods on a still, starry evening, interrupted only by the mournful sigh of an owl. Alba di luna sul bosco (“Moonrise over the Woods”) artfully depicts the appearance of a red moon over the forest and it’s shimmering reflection caught on the surface of a pond; this in turn leads the poet to reflect on the surrounding vast stillness and peace, and how such a perfect sense of communion mirrors, or perhaps even inspires newly found love. As its title suggests, the mood of Tristezze crepuscolare (“Twilight Gloom”) changes from peaceful contemplation to sorrowful angst and agitation as the incessant pealing of evening church bells unearths painful memories of a lost love. The final song, L’incontro (“The Encounter”), ends the cycle on a more hopeful note as it relates the happy reunion of a couple who years before had enjoyed a similar twilight flirtation, with evening bells and sqwaking seabirds now heard in the distance, just the same as before. The accompaniment includes rhythmic patterns similar to those used in the preceding songs, perhaps suggestive of the imperfectly-recalled memories mentioned in the lyrics.

I canti della sera ("The Songs of the Evening")

Italian lyrics by the composer (1908)
English translations by Ed Lein (©2009, E. Sul bosco splende serena
Inoltriamoci insieme. Un mistero c’invita,
Odi: l’assiolo canta.

The Horned Owl Sings

O come! The summer night shines so serene
above the woods and the horned owl sings.
So come, I wish to tell you what I've never said before.
Above our path the stars are blooming, like magic flowers.
We'll enter together and there in the thicket I'll tell you
why I cried one sad twilight when you were gone.
So let's enter together. A mystery invites us--
O hear: the horned owl sings.

Alba di luna sul bosco

Guarda, la luna nasce tutta rossa
come una fiamma congelata nel cielo,
Lo stagno la riflette e l’acqua
  mossa dal vento
Par rabbrividire al gelo.
Che pace immensa, Il bosco addormentato,
si riflette nello stagno.
Quanto silenzio intorno!
Dimmi: È un tramonto o un’alba per l’amor?

Moonrise Over the Woods

Look, the moon appears all red
like a frozen flame in the heavens,
reflected on the pond where the water
  shimmers in the wind
as if shivering from the cold.
Such immense peace, the sleeping wood,
itself reflected in the pool.
Such great silence surrounds us!
Tell me: Is this the twilight or the dawning of love?

Tristezza crepuscolare

Ah! Piangete ancor…
Questa è l’ora dei ricordi,
è l’ora in cui l’antica flamma s’accende
nel cuore disperatamente e lo brucia.
Campane.
Odore di foglie morte.
Tristezze dissepolte!

Twilight Gloom

It's the evening.
Out of the damp earth rises the smell of dead leaves.
It's the hour of pealing bells,
it's a time to breathe
the faded perfume of a bygone love.
And I dream and I weep.
It's the evening.
It's the evening, an evening full of bells,
an evening full of perfumes,
an evening full of memories and death's own sadness.
Weep, O weep you bells of the evening,
fill the vastness of heaven with melancholy.
Ah! Weep again …
This is the hour of remembrance,
it's the time when the old flame engulfs
my desperate heart and ignites it.
Pealing bells.
The smell of dead leaves.
Sorrows unearthed!

L’incontro

Cosa dicemmo quel giorno Io rammentate?
Io non ricordo più.
Ma che importa?
Oggi mi fiorisce nel cuore
la dolcezza appassita di quell’ora lontana.
E m’è dolce stringere nella mia
la vostra mano bianca
e parlarvi d’amor,
anch’oggi vengono di lontano
suoni di campane e di greggi
e anch’oggi il mar come allora ci sorride
  lontano.
Ma oggi forse m’amate un poco,
non sorridete più.
Ah! La vostra mano trema.
Se oggi le belle labbra voi mi darete
non scorderemo più questa dolce ora d'amor!

The Encounter

I no longer remember when it was that we met,
but surely the first time was a bygone dusk
perfused with faded sadness
  along a friendly sea!
The sounds of bells and birds
came to us from afar
and a strange peace washed over us from the sea.
I do remember that!
Do you remember what I said that day?
I no longer recall.
But who cares?
Today my heart blooms
with sweet passion from that time long past.
It's so sweet for me to clasp
your white hand in mine
and speak to you of love,
for today, just as then, there comes from afar
the sounds of bells and birds,
with the sea, just as then, smiling at us
  in the distance.
But maybe today you love me a little--
you're not smiling now ...
Ah! Your hand trembles.
If you'll give me your beautiful lips today
we will never forget this sweet moment of love!

MP3s at alternate site

The Google players are rather fickle of late. Essentially, a beautiful woman sets her sites on a wealthy man, but he rejects her because he doesn't want to be saddled with her several children. She decides she really, really wants the man, so she drowns her children--in some versions the man rejects her again, horrified by her monstrous behavior; and in others she is overcome by remorse and grief at what she has done. In all versions, she ends up drowning herself, and her spirit is doomed to wander the waterways in search of her children, tearfully wailing throughout eternity. (The story usually ends as a cautionary tale for other children--behave and don't venture near the water or La Llorona ["la yah-ROHN-nah"] may mistake you for one of her own children and pull you beneath the waves!)

There are a number of different versions of lyrics for the tune, which mostly seem to have very little to do with the legend. Here are some selected verses in English versions (i.e., not entirely literal translations) by me. The original Spanish words with the English are at http://sites.google.com/site/edwardlein/Home/translations/la-llorona-the-weeping-woman.

They call me black-hearted, Llorona, Llorona,
black-hearted, and one who beguiles.
And like jalapeños burn you, Llorona,
you'll pay if you yield to my wiles.

They think I don't feel the pain, Llorona,
because they can't see me cry.
Yet even the dead are tearless, Llorona,
and their sorrow is greater than mine.

If the heavens were mine, Llorona, Llorona,
for you I’d pull all the stars down.
I’d place the moon there at your feet, Llorona,
and take the sun’s rays for your crown.

O take pity on me, Llorona, Llorona,
and down to the river let's go.
Hold me closely inside your shawl, Llorona,
for I think I shall die in the cold.

To a Savior who bore the world's pain, Llorona,
I confided my horrible grief.
But my sorrowful suffering was such, Llorona,
that it made even Jesus weep.

Translations ©2009-2010, E. Just try! I'll get you, my pretty and your little dog too!"
2. How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?
As with others, the program has encouraged me to examine a little more closely all these things you hear in passing and try to ignore, but really can't afford to.

"Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more."
3. Were there any take-aways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?
See 1., above.

"Oh, don't cry! You'll rust so dreadfully. Here's your oil can."
4. What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?
Like others have noted, one hour is not enough time for many of the assignments. Also, bandwidth issues offer a major challenge, not only in completing the assignments--many of which were better completed away from work--but in putting the various applications to productive use in the Library. If we develop these web 2.0 resources with the current limitations of RAM and connection speed, we are setting ourselves up for failure: we will be sorely challenged developing applications in an efficient manner; and, if our customers, particularly of the in-house variety, can't get them to work properly the results will be counterproductive.

"The sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side. Oh joy! Rapture! I got a brain! How can I ever thank you enough?"
5. If we offered another discovery program like this in the future, would you again chose to participate?
I guess it really depends on what's being examined, but, yes. This has been among the most useful of any of the job-required training courses I've taken (and I've been with the city more than a couple of decades...).

#21 Personal. Would take too long here-- bandwidth issues.

Blithely on to exercise #22:

To establish an Overdrive account, you must first create your account through the JPL website. I know you’re tired of creating user names and passwords, but we're almost there!
I go to the Overdrive page to set up my account. Yes, yes. I am almost there ...

Only, no account set-up in sight on site. Is this a hideous trap?! But she seemed so nice.

I go for Help! Need...Quickstart! No mention of creating Overdrive accounts to log-in, nothing. Nothing. FAQ! N-o-t-h-i-n-g!

Where to turn? I'm lost...gasping...sinking...

Can't watch the Guided tour. It -- won't -- load. No alternate print version offered.

The sky darkens. Melonee approaches--is she too among the lost? I ask for help--She must know--What? She's been this way before! Thank heaven! Only... She looks at the web page, looks at me, at the web page -- can't find -- anything! Nothing! "Something should be done."

No way out--can't...breathe--AAArghhh!

Epilogue
"So," I ask, but none is left to hear, "If you need to log-in to use the service, why is there no mention of this on our web page? Isn't that a 'basic.' Do you set up a new account, or is it already there, included in the same login/password you use for everything else? It seems the latter is true (the usual worked for me, anyway) -- if so, we should proclaim it: 'If you have a card you have access!'"

The MYSTERY of setting up an account aside, I probably won't use Overdrive unless I get an mp3 player that works through my car speakers--driving is the only time I listen to books.

But the site really should mention about registering/logging in, or registration should be made more obvious it it's hidden somewhere. Also, the 1-2-3 Quickstart steps should be listed first thing, without having to stumble on them along the way. No wonder customers are confused.

#20 All right, Mr. DeMille ...

I'm ready for my close-up...

Ah, the good ol' daze. ...
Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance: "All is prepared / Stay, Frederic, stay"

From a February 1988 "Ex Libris" concert in the old Main Library...soprano Judy Wade and I accompanied by Rosalind McEnulty. I couldn't find anyway to pause the streaming until the entire file loads, so if you don't have enough bandwidth you'll get a thousand, give or take, stops and starts as a recording progresses.

Started as a legal music-sharing substitute for Napster, last.fm is a site where musicians or record labels can share their music--excertps, full tracks, even complete albums. You don't have to set up a free account to listen, but if you start an account you can set up a personal library of recordings. Much music is free to listen to, and you can set up an account to buy mp3 downloads. (Perfect for when we get our players for participating in JPL 2.0)

I set up an artist account and uploaded two albums of original compositions I recently compiled:

http://www.last.fm/music/Edward+Lein/+albums

Please listen to some of my <BLINK>FREE</BLINK> tracks some time, and invite a friend ...

They apparently made some big improvements to the site lately, so typically a lot of the stuff that used to work doesn't work now. Progress. For instance, for newly added accounts (like mine) the tags don't currently get indexed. But they know about the problems and they will be fixed (sooner I hope than later, since it isn't Cheers and everybody doesn't know my name so no one will ever find my stuff...unless you go and tell your friends...), and the old (pre-improvement) entries still work.

I only looked at classical stuff, but for many composers you can listen to entire albums for free, or at least hear representative works. It's pretty incredible.

Holiday Concert in Brunswick, GA : 8pm on Monday, 12/15/08

The Coastal Symphony of Georgia is including a piece I wrote-- "In the Bleak Midwinter"--on their program!

#18: 1st Go with Zoho

Go ZOHO! or ZOHO shmo-ho?

This is my first go with , and an immediate annoyance is with page set-up. The margin settings are in percentages -- no one mentioned that there would be math ... Why not use the more common inches (or centimeters for the rest of the world)? The HELP info doesn't seem to care. This is all rhetorical so don't send me your worksheets, but I'm just saying...

In actuality, it doesn't seem that changing the top and bottom margin settings makes any difference anyway--I haven't experimented with different settings enough to really know what's going on, but at first glance changing these settings doesn't seem to have an effect on printing anyway.

"Preview" and "Page View" seem to do the same thing and neither shows you how the printed page will really look--except, you can go directly to a PDF from "Page View" and see the page margins that way.

But when you do either "Preview" or "Page View" there is no instruction on how to get back to the document to continue typing. (All you have to do is to reopen the document, but until you figure this out, it seems like you're just stuck with what you have.)

However, that you have the option to export as PDF is fabulous.

Everything else seems good, too, and it's great that all these formatting features are available for free, and that you can allow collaborative editing online.

The unlimited online storage will diminish to 1GB when the site finishes testing and goes commercial (at which point you can buy more storage), but even 1GB seems pretty good. And it means Library customers who use it to type up a resumé can save it even though they never have a flash drive or disk ...

#17: PB, hold the J

photo: C. So, regardless of the formats the resources take, the need for public libraries (in one form or another) will continue.

And, as always, public libraries will collect what their constituents want and develop the most effective means to deliver the goods.

Digital formats are part of the evolution of information-sharing, not really a revolution (granted, the evolution has speeded up considerably since the heyday of the papyrus scroll). So I'm not worried-- libraries and librarians aren't facing extinction but will continue to evolve as well. The more information that is available, the more people need teams of information professionals to help them find what they seek.

We (JPL) have embraced digital formats and work to expand our digital collections. The Internet provides the ideal avenue for digital delivery, and we try to take full advantage of it, including granting free access to non-residents via free eCards. Only ...

Our immediate problem is marketing-- we have all these really great databases and online services available, and are providing more and more downloadable materials. But sooo many people remain unaware of them, even those who routinely use the Internet for virtually everything (pun intended).

Another thing-- why don't we (JPL) have scanners so we can e-mail copies from print items rather than faxing them? (E-mail is one of the most universally accepted delivery methods, is one of the greatest advantages the Internet offers, and is way more reliable than using outdated fax machines--not taking advantage of the available technology just doesn't make sense.)
#14 Not a Book by Dale Brown ...

I guess there's a need for Technorati, but it's very comprehensiveness, i.e., hoarding masses of swine amid a few pearls (too bad the URL "dogpile" was already taken ...), undermines its usefulness in finding reliable information. In fairness, though, at least they let you change the "level of authority" for the blogs included in a search.

As for searching "Library 2.0," when I finally figured out how to control the search (entire blog vs. tags only) for blogs with "a lot of authority" (a celebration is planned each year on 11/18@7:15am), I got 1,052 results for "search the entire post", and only 259 hits for "tags only"; the blog directory didn't get that specific -- "Web 2.0" is a close as you get, but I was surprised that it gets that close since the directory is limited to pretty broad headings. (I guess I'm too old-fashioned, but I wish they had a big index of suggested tags.)

TIP: The easiest way I could find to change between searching complete blogs to just tags is to:
1. Search your term using the SEARCH box on the Technorati home page, and then
2. Use the CHANGE link to set your parameters:

I was a little surprised by some of the popular searches because they include names of a few folks I've never heard of. But I had no real expectations so there were no big surprises with the "most popular" blogs, except that I would have expected more celebrity gossip than political news, but maybe everybody's still keyed up from the elections...

#13

The first thing I noticed is that the URL has changed to the more user-friendly http://delicious.com.

I'm so used to e-mailing myself URLs to include in the jplstaff Ready Ref pages and in my own Guide to the Best Internet Resources that it will take me a while to get used to the delicious-ness of this site. exercise was really quite depressing, and this despair.com poster pretty much sums up my experience.

Bloglines' Search Tool seems reasonable enough--I searched "classical music" and immediately added a feed from the New York Times, and will likely add others using this tool.

Feedster wouldn't load.

Topix.net really made me nervous -- FOX has set a terrible precedent by distributing unverified opinion as "news" and the political posts that dominated Topix "most popular" stories seem only too eager to join this bandwagon. I'll stick with Reuters and NPR for credible news.

The seemingly indiscriminate nature of sources included in both Syndic8 and Technorati has no appeal to me. I'd rather find sources with some degree of accountability, or at least some that come recommended by folks whose judgement can be respected (e.g., visit some of JPL's Recommended Websites of particular interest and look for newsfeeds on them). There is too much chaff with the wheat for me to find these other sites very useful.

This is America and I do believe that everybody is entitled to an opinion. But really. So many bloggers try mightliy to disprove this. Create your account at bloglines.com & login.
2. Once at http://www.bloglines.com/myblogs, click on Account in the top right corner of the screen.
3. Click on Blog Settings
4. Make up and type in a new, unique username.
5. Next to Show my Blogroll, choose Yes, publish my Blogroll
6. Click on Save Changes

After doing this, the formula http://www.bloglines.com/public/USERNAME will work.

My blogroll may been seen at http://www.bloglines.com/public/EdLein.

Then again, accuracy is not really the issue in certain places ...

Source: Bethi Claus

Technological Heads Up -- DTV Deadline: 2/7/2009

All-digital treehouse?
Federal law requires that all full-power television broadcast stations switch to an all digital format beginning February 7, 2009. So on February 8 the old analog frequencies will no longer be used to transmit any TV shows, but instead will be used for public safety broadcasts, and also some of the freed-up frequencies can then be applied to anticipated new commercial wireless services.

Most TV sets purchased before May 25, 2007, were not required to include digital tuners (or warn you of the absence), so unless you bought your TV within the last year and a half chances are you will want to get a digital-to-analog set-top converter box. Just in case the cable goes out ...

If you have a commercial cable or satellite TV service, its converter box does bypass the immediate need. But you never know. So between January 1, 2008, and March 31, 2009, all U.S. households may request up to two coupons, worth $40 each, to be used toward the purchase of eligible digital-to-analog converter boxes. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) is administering the coupon program. For more information, visit the NTIA website at www.dtv2009.gov.

TIP: these coupons will expire 90 days after mailing.

Pukin' Punkish Punkin

vomiting-pumpkin
Originally uploaded by www.iamspartacus.co.uk
or,
Squeamish
Squalid
Squash?

Sick of traditional pumpkin pie?
